Special session on

Fuzzy Decision Making:

Novel Approaches

The fuzzy set theory has been widely used in many different fields, but one of the most useful fields of its applications has been decision-making due to its ability to represent some type of decision problems common in real world that often involves vague and uncertain information, providing not only a large number of models and tools but also successful practical results.

These decision models and tools have used classical fuzzy concepts as type I fuzzy sets, but recently fuzzy linguistic approaches, type-II fuzzy sets and other extensions and generalizations such as intuitionistic fuzzy sets, hesitant fuzzy sets, and so forth, have boosted the field, producing quite interesting and novel research in fuzzy decision-making.

This invited session aims at providing an opportunity for researchers working in both research areas, fuzzy set theory and decision making, to discuss the state-of-the-art science and technologies and their applications and to share their new ideas, original research results, and practical experiences.

More specifically, we expect you to have any contribution with the focus on theory and practice instances of integrating fuzzy technology, one of the main Soft Computing constituent techniques, into decision models to better solve those engineering, mathematical, and managerial problems involving uncertainty. Topics of interest for this special session include but are not limited to:

For the practical organization of the session, we would appreciate your contribution. We would take advantage of the outcome of this session to join researchers from both areas for future cooperation and joint research.

Authors are invited to submit their manuscripts to the invited session on Fuzzy Decision Making: Novel Approaches. All papers submitted in this session will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

We expect you to submit a tentative title of your paper and your contact details for this session before 20th December, 2014

Special session on Computing with Words for Decision Making

In many real decision situations defined under uncertain environments, with imprecise information, is straightforward the use of linguistic information due to the nature of different aspects of the decision problems. Computing with Words (CW or CWW) is a paradigm of computation whose objects are fuzzy set models of words. It emulates human cognitive processes to improve solving processes of problems dealing with uncertainty.  Consequently, CW has been applied as computational and rational basis to intelligent decision support, because it provides tools close to human beings reasoning processes related to decision making, which improve the resolution of decision making under uncertainty.

Both Decision Making and Computing with Words have recently attracted much attention in which, novel mathematical foundations and new decision models raised to be applied in different decision fields such as multi-criteria decision making, decision analysis, evaluation processes, etc. Because of this variety of disciplines, this invited session aims at providing an opportunity for researchers working this research area to discuss in fundamental, approaches, methodologies, software systems, and applications, to share their novel ideas, original research results and practical experiences. Authors are invited to submit their manuscripts to the invited session on Computing with Words for Decision Making. All papers submitted in this session will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

Brief Description:

Computing with Words (CW) is a methodology that deals with words or sentences defined in a natural or artificial language instead of numbers, it emulates human cognitive processes to improve solving processes of problems dealing with uncertainty. Consequently, CW has been applied as a computational basis to linguistic decision-making because it provides tools close to human beings’ reasoning processes related to decision-making, which improve the resolution of decision-making under uncertainty as linguistic decision-making.

Both Decision Making and Computing with Words have recently attracted much attention, in which novel mathematical foundations and new decision models have been raised to be applied in different decision fields such as multi-criteria decision making, decision analysis, evaluation processes, etc.

Objectives and topics:

This invited session aims at providing an opportunity for researchers working in both research areas to discuss and to share their new ideas, original research results and practical experiences. More specifically, we expect you to have any contribution with the focus on the use of computing with words models in decision making. The topics of this special session are as follows:

  • Linguistic Decision analysis

Short biography of the organizers:

Francisco Herrera received the M.Sc. degree in Mathematics in 1988 and the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics in 1991, both from the University of Granada, Spain. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada. He has published more than 250 papers in international journals. He currently acts as Editor in Chief of the international journal “Progress in Artificial Intelligence (Springer). He acts as an area editor of the International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems and  associated editor of the journals: IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, Information Sciences, Knowledge and Information Systems, Advances in Fuzzy Systems, and International Journal of Applied Metaheuristics Computing; and he serves as a member of several journal editorial boards, among others: Fuzzy Sets and Systems, Applied Intelligence, Information Fusion, Evolutionary Intelligence, International Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems, Memetic Computation, and;Swarm and Evolutionary Computation. He received the following honors and awards: ECCAI Fellow 2009, IFSA  Fellow 2013, 2010 Spanish National Award on Computer Science ARITMEL to the “Spanish Engineer on Computer Science”, International Cajastur “Mamdani” Prize for Soft Computing (Fourth Edition, 2010), IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy System Outstanding 2008  Paper Award (bestowed in 2011),  and 2011  Lotfi A. Zadeh Prize Best Paper Award of the  International Fuzzy Systems Association, and 2013 AEPIA Award for a scientific career in Artificial Intelligence (September 2013). His current research interests include genetic fuzzy systems, computing with words and decision making, bibliometrics, data mining, data preparation, instance selection, fuzzy rule-based systems, knowledge extraction based on evolutionary algorithms, cloud computing and big data.

Luis Martínez received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Sciences, both from the University of Granada, Spain, in 1993 and 1999, respectively. Currently, he is Full Professor of Computer Science Department and Head of ICT Research Centre at the University of Jaén. His current research interests are linguistic preference modeling, decision making, fuzzy logic based systems, computer aided learning, sensory evaluation, recommender systems and electronic commerce. He co-edited nine journal special issues on fuzzy preference modelling, soft computing, linguistic decision making and fuzzy sets theory and published more than 60 papers in journals indexed by the SCI as well as 30 book chapters and more than 100 contributions in International Conferences related to his areas.
He is member of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology, IEEE. Co-Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems and an Associated Editor of the International Journal of Fuzzy Systems and serves as member of the journal Editorial Board of the Journal of Universal Computer Sciences and the Scientific World Journal. He received the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON FUZZY SYSTEMS Outstanding 2008 Paper Award (bestowed in 2011). And he is Guest Professor in the Southwest Jiaotong University and honourable professor in Xihua University both in Chengdu (China).

ISKE 2013 SPECIAL SESSION: Decision Making under Uncertainty: Models and Applications

Decision making is an inherent mankind activity, frequently present in a wide range of applications and research areas, such as engineering, psychology, management, economy, medicine and so on. Due to this variety of disciplines and decision situations, a number of models and decision support tools have been developed to aid humans during the resolution of decision making problems, and they have been put in practice in many real-life application contexts in which uncertainty is present. Many approaches and tools to model and manage such uncertainty have been proposed in the last decades in decision making.

Aims and Scope
This special session aims at providing an opportunity for researchers working in the diverse areas of decision making under uncertainty to discuss theoretical and practical aspects, methodologies and applications related to such areas, to share their novel ideas, research results and practical experiences. Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscript to this special session on Decision Making under Uncertainty: Models and Applications.
For the practical organization of the session, your contribution is appreciated. The outcome of this special session would serve to join researchers from diverse areas within the field of decision making under uncertainty for future cooperation and joint research.

Special session on

Recommender and decision systems with soft computing

Decision systems has helped decision makers compile useful information from a combination of raw data, documents, and personal knowledge, or business models to identify and solve problems and make decisions in many different fields such as management, operations, and planning. The advent of Internet has raised new niches of application of such a type of systems, being Recommender Systems one of the most successful internet based decision systems to support customers in their shopping decisions in e-shops and so forth.

Despite soft computing techniques are broadly known for their use in expert and control systems, its application to decision systems can be considered similarly significant. Decision making and recommender models have been revisited, modified and optimized by the use of soft computing techniques producing important novelties in both research and applications.

Aims and Scope.

This invited session aims at providing an opportunity for researchers working in both research areas to discuss theoretical and practical aspects of adding soft techniques to decision systems, soft computing in group decision support systems, soft computing techniques in intelligent agents, opportunities and challenges for soft computing in recommender systems, empirical studies of the use of soft computing techniques to add human aspects to decision systems and identify directions for further work.

For the practical organization of the session, we would appreciate your contribution. We would take advantage of the outcome of this session to join researchers from both areas for future cooperation and joint research.

Submissions

Special session papers will be handled in the same way as regular papers. In particular, they will be peer-reviewed by the conference program committee on the basis of the same criteria, and the final decision of acceptance or rejection will be made by the conference chairs.
