Preference Modelling

Preference Modelling is a key activity in Decision Making Problems, irrespective of the decision area. According to their knowledge, experience and beliefs, experts must provide their assessments regarding the set of alternatives and order them according to the suitability of each alternative, as the solution to the problem.

In decision problems, experts use preference modelling close to their disciplines and expertise. For example, experts who belong to science areas can feel very comfortable representing their preferences by means of numerical values. However, experts belonging to arts or social sciences (Psychology, Sociology,…) might prefer expressing their preferences by using expression domains which are closer to human language, by means of qualitative assessments, such as linguistic terms.

Preference Modelling is a topic within of the Decision Making, aimed to represent experts' preferences. In such topic we can distinguish between:

  1. The structure of information used by experts to the represent their preferences.
  2. The domain of the information in which the experts express the preferences on the set of alternatives at the problem.

Our research has focussed mainly on the domain of the information where we have developed a new linguistic representation information model (2-tuples) and its application to different decision problems.
